10 Ways To Invest In Yourself In The New Year

Sharing is caring!

The best ways you can invest in yourself don’t involve spending a ton of money (if any at all), but more so act as opportunities for you to find out what you need from yourself to feel fulfilled in life. When I first began my blog, I knew I wanted to mainly write about wellness. Simply because it’s something I feel very strongly about. The main thing that I have learned through this journey so far is that it’s essential to prioritize my personal growth before anything else.

It’s important to always remember that you are your most valuable asset. You must spend time investing in yourself – before a job, a relationship, or any other aspect of life that requires your energy. And what better time than the new year?? For your overall wellness, it’s vital to take time to sort out your purpose, what it is you love, and how you’d like to develop your capabilities. This sets a sturdy foundation, and with that said, the job, the relationship, and everything else will fall into place. Read on for 10 ways you can invest in yourself in the new year!

10 ways to invest in yourself

1. Set achievable goals

The new year is all about setting goals or resolutions. New year, new you, right?! However, it’s important that we all learn how to set achievable aspirations that are both personal and business goals for ourselves. That way we can maintain them easier. If you’re not taking the time to set goals it’s like driving in the dark with the headlights turned off. You will not know where you’re going and you will waste precious time. Be sure to also set some time frames in which to meet them. When it comes to setting goals for the new year and standards that you want to achieve, an easy and simple approach is to set S.M.A.R.T goals.

S.M.A.R.T goals stand for: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Timely. It will keep you well organized, help you develop better time-management skills, and help keep you focused on any goal that you want to achieve.

2. Start a morning ritual

I think morning rituals are so important for setting the overall tone for the day! Not to mention, habitual morning rituals lead to more productivity and lower levels of stress throughout the afternoon. With that, think of 3-5 positive actions you can take to empower productive behavior and stick to it.

Here are a few of my favorite ideas: drink a full glass of lemon water as soon as you wake up, do 5-10 minutes of light yoga or stretching, don’t check your email right away, listen to a podcast as you get ready or commuting to work, and/or read a passage from an inspirational book. Tiny actions (such as the ones I listed) will help get the creative juices flowing, and will set you up for a successful, happier day!

3. Take care of your mind and body

When you’re feeling like crap and you haven’t been active in weeks or months, it’s bound to catch up with you. And you’ll begin to notice just how much it can start to affect you socially, personally, and even at work. If you can’t find the motivation to exercise at home, then perhaps it’s worth investing in some kind of gym membership. Whether that’s cycling, yoga or just to go walk on the treadmill for a bit. Trust me, it’s well worth it! Whatever the workout, the best kind of workout is the one you’ll actually do, (see next tip!) So if that means finding a certain allowance for health in your monthly budget, do it!

Along with that, the same exact thing goes for your mental health as well. However, this is definitely an area that, if you’re struggling, you shouldn’t try to deal with it on your own. Find a therapist or even a friend or family member that you trust and can depend on. One that won’t judge you, give biased opinions, and one that you feel you can be open and honest with. Additionally, try out a form of mediation or bullet journaling. Whatever kind of positive outlet that you can turn to when your mental health needs a recharge!

4. Find a workout that you love

You’ll hear me say time and time again that your mental and physical health are two of the most important things to cultivate at the beginning of a new year. And especially in your 20s! I truly believe that this is the time when our habits are formed for the rest of our lives, and exercise is definitely a lifelong habit to uphold.

However, though many people set goals for the new year that are related to physical health, many of them go all in and don’t end up achieving their desired goal. And I believe that it’s because many people have the goal to work out – but actually hate working out or can’t find the time to do so.

It can be hard enough to find time to exercise, and trying to find workout motivation in the process can make it even more difficult and stressful! This causes you to feel down on yourself, guilty, exhausted, and simply annoyed with it all! Sound familiar? I understand the feeling! I find that the number one problem that many people have with exercise is the feeling that they “have to” do it. And that feeling like you “have” to do something just makes you not want to do it even more.

That being said, there are SO many forms of exercise you can do that won’t make you feel like you have to do it. You just have to find the one for you! There truly is something for everyone! Boxing, pilates, running, yoga, Tabata, kickboxing, CrossFit, H.I.I.T, weight training, etc. Investing (both with your money and your time) in finding an exercise that you really enjoy is so important and such a great way to invest in yourself in your 20s and in the new year!

5. Learn a new hobby

Take time this year to learn a new hobby that you’ve been interested in! It’s a great outlet to have for when work, school, or simply life, in general, become stressful and hectic. It’s also an excellent way to feel more stable in your social life and life outside of your job/career. For me, my main outlet is my blog.

With that, there are so many ideas out there that are perfect for everyone. Your hobby or hobbies could include volunteering, exercising, starting a book club, joining a church group, knitting, or whatever you enjoy doing or want to try out. Whether it’s a time or monetary investment, finding something that you can feel proud of outside of work, school, and other stressful events in your life is so important!

6. Honor your intuition

We all have our own intuition, but we don’t always know how to listen to it. Your intuition is here to guide you into empowered actions. Learning how to trust your gut will help you make better, smarter decisions. I know for me personally, if I choose to ignore my gut or intuition when I feel a strong feeling about something, it almost always is a decision or action that I end up regretting.

But, how do we train ourselves to become more aware of it? Ask yourself the difficult questions, and listen to the first answer that pops into your head. Or, another trick to try when faced between two tough decisions… play heads or tails. When you toss the coin up in the air you’ll instinctively know which side you hoped it would land on. Interesting right? These are just little ways that you can practice and eventually become much more aware of your intuition as you grow.

7. Invest in building your confidence

As I said in the beginning, “new year, new you,” therefore, take the time to make investing in building and strengthing your confidence one of your new year resolutions this year! People who know their value, have something to say and others will listen. You can invest in yourself by developing an understanding of the value that you possess and offer others. Learn to have the courage to speak your truth and honor your opinion and standards. The more you love yourself and own the value that you offer, the more confident you will become in sharing it with others.

8. Leave toxic relationships in the past

Leave the toxic relationships behind! You don’t need to bring the negative relationships or friendships into the new year with you. Or at any time of the year for that matter. If you are currently in a relationship that seems to make you feel more depleted and unhappy rather than assured and encouraged, then you need to call it quits.

This is a brand new year! It’s the time to focus on yourself, your happiness, and your independence. Don’t settle in a relationship where you keep giving from a cup that’s only half full or completely empty. With that, you can’t expect to find yourself in any kind of demanding and exhausting relationship. Do it for the sake of your mental and emotional wellness! Letting go of a toxic person is never a bad or selfish thing to do!

9. Let yourself day-dream

We tend to under-appreciate the power of introspection. Therefore, allow your mind to play and be creative! Open-ended reflection is such a vital part of our growth process. It will impact your creativity and strengthen your cognitive wellness. So, give your mind a break, and just allow it to wander once in a while. And let me tell you, some of the best ideas can blossom from a daydream!

10. Put your happiness first

Always remember that happiness is a choice. You can’t wait for happiness because if you do, it will never come. Happiness is a decision that you make every single morning, it’s not a future destination. With that, happy people choose to focus on the positive aspects of life, rather than the negative. They are not held hostage by their circumstances. They look at all the reasons to be grateful. Most importantly, they don’t let others dim their light of positivity and they don’t allow toxic and negative people to be in their life for long. Remember this quote: “Most people are about as happy as they make up their minds to be.”- Abraham Lincoln

Along with this, happy people don’t put their time or energy into those who try to drag them down. This goes for relationships, friendships, or even family members. In order to focus on yourself and your mental/physical health each day, you need to start by putting your happiness first. Just like the popular saying, “you can’t pour from an empty cup.” In order to help others and make other people happy, you need to prioritize your happiness first and foremost.
