Hey there! How have you been doing? Hanging in there? Have you been feeling uninspired, unmotivated, or simply bored lately? I know the feeling. Trust me, I’m a total homebody, but having to spend this much time indoors can really start to drive me crazy lol. There’s only so much cleaning, sleeping, and writing that I can do each day haha! With that, I wanted to bring you 7 new hobbies that you might want to try out while social distancing! Let me know what you think!
1. Baking
I’ve been doing a lot of baking recently and it’s been such a great stress relief! Not to mention, my boyfriend, Marlin, loves it and it makes the house smell amazing haha! My tip for you would be to start with some more simple recipes to increase your confidence.
Along with this, there are a TON of videos on YouTube showing basic baking skills and also walking you through all sorts of delicious recipes. Although baking can sometimes seem intimidating, I think it’s such a fun and carefree activity that you may actually want to continue doing and getting better at! Also, for a fun activity, you and your partner could try making each other’s favorite dessert and have each of you try it! Or you could even create a new dessert together!
2. Running
What better time than now to take up running?! Of course, it doesn’t happen overnight, you have to train and dedicate a lot of time to it! But now that we have a lot more free time on our hands, now is the perfect time to begin! With that, check out this New York Times guide on how to start running if you’re not sure where to begin.
There are some really great tips for picking comfortable shoes and starting with the run-walk method. Also, to dedicate yourself even more, sign up for a race in the future that you want to run in for extra motivation and inspiration!
3. Start a blog
I might be biased, but a blog is a wonderful hobby to start during this time! Anytime for that matter, but since we’re in quarantine, I think this is the perfect time to start a blog! My biggest piece of advice for you is to pick something you’re really passionate about – it could be books, cooking, gardening, personal development, fitness, traveling, your dog, parenting, etc. – and get started!
You could also just write about your daily life, it’s a great, creative way for family and friends to keep up with you since we can’t see each other in person right now! Not to mention, a blog is such a great creative outlet, especially for my people who love to write!
4. Reading
Reading is definitely something that I have been dying to start getting into. However, I’ve always been “too busy” or “too tired” to begin a new novel. But now that I’m stuck inside and have all of this time on my hands, I’ve decided that I’m going to put reading higher on my priority list. Not to mention, getting lost in a really good book is the perfect way to escape reality for a little bit. So what better time than right now?!
Also, if you have any book suggestions please leave them in the comments below!!
5. Scrapbooking
This one is such a cute idea to do with your partner! Or maybe even your parents and siblings! It’s such a sweet and memorable item to have on hand that you can look back at for years! You could either design a digital photo book and have it printed and delivered to your doorstep, or you can even order prints and create your own scrapbook from things you already have at home. Some scrapbook theme ideas include your first year of marriage (or dating in my case!), your child’s first five years, family vacations, road trips, holidays, etc.
I love the idea of creating a scrapbook that you can add to for years and years! For example, I want to fill one up of all the photos while Marlin and I are dating and then one day add photos from our wedding day and so on! Sort of like an ongoing timeline of our life spent together.
6. Gardening
Imagine cooking something in your kitchen, and running to your very own herb garden to snip a piece of basil for your meal! How cool would that be?! You can start with this organic home garden kit for beginners, which includes all the things you need to grow basil, cilantro, sage, thyme, and parsley. Plus, this little planter box is adorable and would look so cute on a kitchen windowsill!
7. Photography
Photography is such a great way to force yourselves to explore new areas and learn some new photography skills! And since most of us are quarantine, why not take this time to learn more about how your camera works (the different features and angle techniques) and take an online photography course! In fact, Nixon photography is allowing people to stream every photography class that they offer right now for free throughout the month of April! If photography is something you’re passionate about or something you’ve always wanted to try out, now is your chance to take advantage of this offer!!
Have you started any new hobbies during this time?
I’d love to hear! Let me know in the comments! Also, if you have any good book suggestions, I would love it if you listed some in the comments below as well! 💛
Have a beautiful day!
