Finding the time and the energy to stick to a workout plan in college can be difficult. I mean, trying to balance your classes, work, social life, and sleep schedule is no easy fete. However, I do believe that it is crucial to stay active and maintain a consistent workout regime. I know it can be hard, especially, if you are living in a dorm room or sharing an apartment bedroom. But exercise is so important for your overall health as a college student! Not only for your physical health, but exercise has also been proven to bring numerous benefits to your mental health, sleep, and stress reduction. Now that the beginning of the school season is approaching, I wanted to share with you my top 3 easy ways to stay fit and healthy in college!
1. Make it fun
Keep your daily physical activity sustainable and exciting by switching it up and doing what is enjoyable to you! For instance, make it a fun (and free!) weekend activity to do with your friends or your significant other. Pack some healthy snacks and go for a hike or a bike ride through your local park. If there are no places to hike near you, get a group together and sweat it out by playing a sport such as football, soccer, or basketball. Take part in the healthy competition and relieve some stress all while burning calories as well! Instead of sleeping in, binge-watching Netflix, or going out to the bar at night, change it up and utilize your time to do something healthy!

2. Grab a friend
Find a friend or significant other that will join you! Personally, I always get a lot more motivated to workout and push up myself when I have someone with me.
One thing that I did in the past that I found to be super helpful was I encouraged my friend to join me every Sunday evening to do yoga in my basement with me. We would put on a 20-minute yoga Youtube video each Sunday with our green tea and lemon lol! And I really miss that! I seriously looked forward to Sunday evenings because I knew that it meant relaxation, yoga, exercise, and spending quality time with one of my closest friends.
With that, encourage your friends or roommates to sign up for a new yoga, cycling, or cardio class with you! You can all coordinate specific times to meet that way it works out for everyone. Or, you could sign up for an online fitness program with a coach and split the costs between everyone! Do some research, there are tons of people who sell 12-15 week exercise programs that you can do at home (in a dorm) or at the gym. It’s always easier to complete a workout when you have someone that will hold you reliable!

3. Utilize your study breaks
One of my favorite ways to relieve stress after hours of studying or working is to sweat it out! For just 20 to 30 minutes I either do a quick high-intensity interval (HIIT) workout, take my dogs for a walk around my neighborhood, or leave my house to go do some weight-training. If you live on campus, try asking one of your friends to go for a walk with you after class and grab some coffee afterward! Or you could walk around campus for 30 minutes while catching up with a family member or loved one over the phone.
Breaking up my study sessions with a quick workout has been incredibly beneficial! I find that my energy levels and my attention span increase after my exercise break. I definitely feel more motivated after working than I do after I take a nap. A quick exercise will allow your brain to de-stress, reset and recharge so you’ll be ready to focus on your studying once again!
