I always try to start the year off on the right foot, and getting organized is a great way to do that. Even if you’re already a pretty organized person, there are a few things you can do to take that to the next level! Therefore, if getting organized is one of your goals as well, check out my top 8 ways to up your organization skills in 2020!
1. Decant your pantry staples into clear storage containers
Talk about next-level organization! If you’ve ever stopped and stared at an image (like on Instagram!) of a perfectly organized pantry, you’ll notice that all of the pantry staples (i.e pasta, grains, and cereal) are decanted into clear containers. Not on does this look so pretty, but, doing this will actually save tons of space in your pantry! This is because you’re not dealing with all different sized boxes and bags. Plus, it makes it easier to find the ingredients you’re looking for!
2. Open your mail every day
This is probably one of the easiest tasks to begin with when organizing your home! I don’t know about you, but I am definitely guilty of letting mail pile up on a console table or countertop and letting it sit around for days. With that, I am going to set a goal this year to open and sort through my mail each and every day. And I believe that this is such an easy, yet motivating, way to start organizing your home/office.
After you sort through your mail, immediately toss any junk mail or items you are done with into the recycling. Then, take the items that require follow-up to your desk and make sure you respond to them within a day or two.
3. Check expiration dates and do a huge purge
This is one organization tips that I definitely need to work on! If it’s been a while since you last checked, make sure that your medicine cabinet, pantry, refrigerator, and makeup bag are not housing any items that are past their prime. Having a clean slate will help you keep those spaces organized. Not to mention, it makes you feel 10x better going into the new year with fresh, ready-to-use products!
4. Use a uniform set of hangers in your closet
The very first step in organizing your closet is investing in a set of good, uniform hangers. Having a mish-mash of different hangers makes it harder to move them around and look for clothing. With that, it doesn’t matter what kind of hangers you choose to buy and organize your closet with!
Whether you choose to save money and use cheaper, all-white hangers from Target or choose to purchase velvet, colored ones (my fav!). It doesn’t matter! All that matters is using the set of uniform hangers to organize your clothing items and make everything look neater and more put together.
5. Bring on the baskets
Using baskets are definitely one of my top favorite ways to up my organization skills! Baskets are such a great secret weapon for storing items that are less than attractive on their own. For example, these large woven baskets make beautiful pieces of home décor! Additionally, they create a practical way to round up towels, toiletries, toys, laundry, craft supplies, and practically anything else you can think of. I also love to use smaller storage baskets to organize food in my pantry as well!
6. Labels, labels, labels!
You know that saying, “out of sight, out of mind?” If you can’t see something, you won’t end up using it. Therefore, try to make use of labels in every storage space in your house. From your pantry to the powder room, label every bin, container, box, etc. to ensure that you are staying organized, as well as using everything in each room of your home.
7. Swap in stackable storage bins
If you don’t have a custom built-in closet (like me!) stackable storage is the next best thing. Clear storage bins and stackable shoe boxes are a very worthy investment. Plus, they make it easier and quicker to find the items that you are looking for!
8. Color code

Look at how beautiful and neat this cute color-coded playroom looks! Color coding is a great system for organizing things like books, clothes, beauty products, craft supplies, children’s toys, and so much more. Not only does it look lovely, but it makes it easier to find things as well!
